Q: Do you have a favorite sippy cup?
Our go-to cup for the past year has been the 4 ounce glass bottle and the Sippy Cap from Lifefactory. They are durable, easy to clean, and they don't spill much liquid when they get knocked over. We also use our Kleen Kanteen regularly for water when we leave the house, though she was two before she really mastered that sport top. (We spilled a lot of water before that!) They too are easy to clean and super durable. We had a number of BPA-free palstic straw cups between age 1 and 2, but none of them lasted more than a few months, so I'm not going to recommend any specifically. We did just come across this stainless steel bottle system from Pura Kiki, which grows with your kiddo with different tops, which looks pretty genius.
Q: What snacks do you like to pack when flying with a toddler?
It depends a little on the age of the child, but here is my basic thought process:
- Pack foods that are easy to eat. You never know where you might be when the little one needs a snack, so simple foods that aren't too messy are best. Pouches for little eaters*, simple nut butter sandwiches, bananas, raisins, buttered pasta, cheese sticks, nut butter packages, snack bars, and sliced veggies like cucumbers or bell pepper are good options.
- Include a few new or "treat" snacks. Flying is hard with a toddler, that is just the reality, but having a few unexpected foods can make the time more fun. For us, this means fruit leather, Bunny Treats, and usually a cracker of some sort.
- Let them choose something during a layover. If I can find one of the healthy food kiosks (like Cibo in Chicago) or a Jamba Juice, I let the little one choose a snack. Almost every time she chooses some sort of a snack bar, like the Cliff Kid Zbars.
- Don't stress if they don't have a normal eating day. Flying throws everything off, try not to worry too much if the kiddo snacks more than normal. Just consider it as a way to make the rest of the travel experience a little better and get back to normal the next day!
*My daughter once squeezed almost an entire yogurt pouch all over my pants during a flight when she was about 16 months, so take that into consideration and perhaps pack yourself a change of clothes!
