There are so many wellness plans, detox bootcamps, food challenges and diet “rounds” available now. Their marketing always frames these projects as “lifestyle changes,” but we’re calling them what they really are: Diets. That love to target moms! In this episode, we explore whether diets, food restrictions or “lifestyle plans” can ever be compatible with family life. Plus, what to look out for if you’re exploring one of these newer plans—like the inevitable crash that comes after the honeymoon period, the guilt, and the ramifications that can reach the rest of your family.

Resources Mentioned in the Podcast
- For the vast majority of us, dieting doesn’t result in permanent weight loss—according to a whole host of studies led by researcher Traci Mann, who runs a health and eating lab and is the author of Secrets From the Eating Lab.
- The guilt that comes when you fail at one of these plans in intense. (I felt it after trying I Quit Sugar. V after doing a serious detox for this SELF Magazine story back in 2015.)

What’s New: First Time Aldi Shopper
I finally tried out Aldi, got super overwhelmed, and scooped up a few great products. (Score on the price of organic whole milk yogurt!) Listen to hear what she thought of the store and comment below with your favorite Aldi products to help me next time!
Plus: We Tried the Moment App
Virginia tells us about her experience using the Moment app in an attempt to curb her own screen time. She was inspired to try this after reading this Atlantic article by early education expert Erika Christakis, and How to Be A Happier Parent by KJ Dell’Antonia, which has an excellent (realistic!) chapter on kids and screens. Because you guys, many of us parents are using our phones for hours (and HOURS) a day without even realizing it! Listen to hear about the giant changes this has made in her life — she’s down from 5-6 hours of phone usage a day to 2 hours or less most days. (And that’s without following the Moment Bootcamp program 100 percent perfectly — proof that it’s always better to figure out what works for you when trying to make a big lifestyle change, rather than beat yourself up for not obeying someone else’s plan.)
