Stewed Peaches

We have a peach tree in our yard and we’ve had some years when it delivers a bumper crop. This year was one of those years and while I was almost overwhelmed by the volume of peaches, I am so glad I figured out this super quick method to prep the peaches for the kids.

This is a great way to handle a lot of peaches, to make slightly less ripe fruit soft and flavorful, and to intensify the natural peach flavor.

These are wonderful as a snack or paired with other foods (like yogurt, oatmeal, or chicken), so they are super versatile. You can even freeze them if you make a big batch!

Ingredients You Need

You just need fresh peaches to make this recipe. They can be ripe or slightly underripe. They all work!

  1. Peel the peaches and discard the pit.
  2. Roughly dice to desired size. (I am not very precise with the size of the pieces as you can see!)
  3. Add to a pot with water and simmer until soft.
  4. Serve as is, mash slightly, or store to serve later.

TIP: I prefer to make these without the peel on the fruit, though you can leave it on if you like.

What are these Stewed Peaches good with?

I often serve them to my one year old as they are as a simple fruit side dish or snack. Or I like to stir them into oatmeal or have them with cottage cheese or yogurt.

You could also serve them with something savory like roasted pork or chicken if that sounds good to you.

How to Store

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for 3-5 days.

To freeze, let cool fully and place into a freezer container. Freeze for up to 6 months. To use, thaw overnight in the fridge and serve cold or slightly warmed.

  • Serve cold as a simple fruit side dish or with yogurt. (You can even blend the peaches with plain yogurt and serve it in a reusable pouch.)
  • Serve warm with oatmeal as another option.
  • Sweeten to taste as desired. The sweetness of peaches can vary a lot, so taste the fruit once it’s cooked and add sweetener as needed. I like honey, but maple syrup works too.
  • You can blend this into a simple peach puree if desired.
  • Dice them into small pieces (like the size of a pea) for older babies or slightly bigger pieces as the kids are older.

Easy Stewed Peaches

You can make these with slightly underripe peaches (which is handy if you happen to have a lot of them).

Ingredients

  • 3 pounds ripe peaches (about 5-6 cups diced)
  • 2 tablespoons honey (increase or decrease as desired)

Instructions

  • Wash and peel the peaches with a paring knife or vegetable peeler.
  • Dice roughly and add to a medium pot. Add 1 cup water. Cover and bring to a simmer over medium heat, then remove the lid and cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring occasionally, or until peaches are soft when poked with a fork.
  • Stir in the honey, as desired according to how sweet you want them.
  • Mash slightly if desired, or serve as is with or without the liquid.
