With a bright blueberry flavor and pretty purple color, this Blueberry Cream Cheese Frosting is delicious and ready in minutes. You can make it ahead, too!

For years we’ve been making my Strawberry Cream Cheese Frosting and kept getting questions about which other fruits work as frosting. Blueberry!
This frosting is naturally purple without the need for food coloring, bright in flavor, and it takes just minutes to make.
You can even make this up to 24 hours ahead and store in a plastic zip-top bag in the fridge until ready to use. It’s great on my Healthy Vanilla Cupcakes, Blueberry Smash Cake, Vegan Vanilla Cake, and Funfetti Cake.
Why This Recipe Works
With just 4 ingredients and a simple method, you can make creamy blueberry frosting that is naturally bright purple and perfect for kids birthdays and holidays.

Ingredients You Need
Below is an overview of what you need to make this Blueberry Cream Cheese Frosting recipe so you know what to have on hand.

- Freeze-dried blueberries: This is the key element that turns the frosting bright purple and gives it flavor. Look for them near the dried fruit.
- Cream cheese: Block-style cream cheese (not whipped) is best in this recipe for making the creamiest frosting. I typically use full-fat, though it will work with low-fat too.
- Unsalted butter: A little butter helps balance the flavor of the cream cheese. I prefer to use unsalted in this recipe.
- Vanilla extract: You can use pure or artificial vanilla extract in this recipe to add flavor.
- Honey or powdered sugar: Either of these options work to add a touch of sweetness to the frosting. (I most often use powdered sugar since it helps the frosting firm up a little, but honey does work too. Avoid honey for kids under age 1.)

Frequently Asked Questions
Since they have a lot of moisture and will make cream cheese runny if blended together, the best option is to use plain Cream Cheese Frosting and decorate with fresh berries or other fresh fruit. Or drizzle my Blueberry Sauce over the plain frosting.
Sure, use substitutions including vegan cream cheese and vegan butter.
To do that, I recommend using powdered sugar then adding the frosting to the piping bag. Refrigerate for 30 minutes, then use.

How to Store
Store in a zip top storage bag with as much air removed as possible for up to 3 days. If it is open to the air for hours on end, it may lose some of the brightness, so this storage option is best.

Ingredients
- 1 cup freeze-dried blueberries
- 8 ounces cream cheese (I like full fat, softened at room temperature)
- ¼ cup unsalted butter (½ stick, softened at room temperature)
- 2 tablespoons honey or powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- ¼ cup powdered sugar, optional
Instructions
- Place the freeze-dried blueberries into a blender or clean spice grinder. Grind into a fine powder.
- Add to a medium bowl with the rest of the ingredients.
- Blend well using a handheld electric mixer on high speed to make a fluffy frosting. OR stir with a whisk or spatula.
- Transfer to a zip-top quart-size bag. Seal. Cut off 1 bottom corner and pipe onto cupcakes. (You can also just use a spatula to frost onto a cake or cupcakes.)

Notes
- Let the cream cheese and butter soften at room temperature for a few hours so it’s very soft to the touch. This will help it mix up smoothly.
- Grind the blueberries to form a fine powder.
- Add an additional ¼ cup powdered sugar to make the frosting sweeter if you’d like. (I sometimes do this if serving to older kids and/or adults who may expect a sweeter frosting.)
- Top with sprinkles if desired.
