Things turned a little upside down last week when I got the call from preschool that L was sick. It's just such a sinking feeling, knowing that your little one isn't well, and that there are very few things we can do to make them feel better when they are in the thick of it. This All-Fruit Smoothie, which is a super simple blend of fresh orange and banana, was one thing I tried once she was able to keep liquids down.
Truthfully, we aren't the biggest smoothie drinkers during a large chunk of the year because the idea of drinking a freezing cold drink when it's subzero outside is completely unappealing to me. But I recently realized that I can make them less icy, yet still delicious, as a way to offer produce that my girl might otherwise not eat. (I've also found them to be really helpful for helping me to meet my daily pregnancy protein goal.) This smoothie, which is super frothy and almost milkshake-like even though it doesn't contain any dairy. It's a good drink for hydration, to pair with a more substantial snack or meal, or as a fruit juice alternative when you want to serve up the whole fruit, including the fiber.
To make a glass for myself and one for L, I blended together:
2 fresh medium oranges (as much of the white pith removed as possible)
1 sliced frozen banana
The key is to blend it long enough that it becomes fully incorporated and so that there aren't any chunks. It's cool, but not frozen, and a bright note when we might not be feeling 100%.
I'm planning to try orange with some frozen pineapple and maybe then strawberries as soon as I can pick some up at the store.
