Plain apple slices are always great, but these Chocolate Covered Apple Slices are a quick treat that is nutritious and so yummy. You’ll be amazed at how far a few melted chocolate chips can go!

My kids go through a ton of apples, both fresh and cooked into Cinnamon Apples and Sauteed Apples. And sometimes, as a special treat, I dunk them in a quick dark chocolate sauce that hardens in minutes. It’s so yummy and a great alternative to candy apples for little kids!

SUMMARIZE & SAVE THIS CONTENT
You can offer these as a dessert for kids, as after school snacks, or as a healthy Halloween treat. We love adding some seasonal sprinkles, but you can also add minced walnuts or peanuts or shredded unsweetened coconut if you prefer.
Why This Recipe Works
A quick chocolate magic shell quickly coats fresh apple slices in a very thin chocolate layer. It hardens to give the effect of candy apples that are much easier to eat—with less of the candy part!

Ingredients You Need
Here’s a look at the 3 simple ingredients you need to make Chocolate Covered Apple Slices so you know what to have on hand.

- Chocolate Chips: I prefer to make this recipe with dark chocolate chips so that coating has the most chocolate flavor. (You can also use a chocolate bar, just chop it up first.)
- Apples: You can use any variety of apples you prefer here.
- Coconut Oil: You can use refined or unrefined coconut oil here. I use it because it helps the chocolate harden into a crisp texture.
How to Make Chocolate Covered Apple Slices
Here’s a preview of how to make this simple Chocolate Covered Apple Slices snack. Scroll down for the full recipe and amounts.

Step 1. Add the chocolate and coconut oil to a heat-safe bowl.

Step 2. Heat in the microwave (or over a double boiler) to melt. Stir well.

Step 3. Evenly slice the apples. (Thin slices are easier for toddlers to chew.)

Step 4. Use a fork to dunk the apple slices in the chocolate, letting the excess drip off. Place on a parchment-lined tray and add sprinkles if using.
TIP: The chocolate will harden as it cools, though I usually pop it into the fridge for a few minutes to speed up the process.

How to Store
Since the chocolate covers the slices, it keeps them from browning. Which means you can store these apple slices in an airtight container in the fridge for about 5 days and they will stay fresh.
Best Tips for Success
- Use a fork to dunk the apples and let the excess chocolate drip off and drag the bottom of the fork along the side of the bowl to avoid much pooling of extra chocolate under each slice as you set them down on the parchment paper.
- Use dark chocolate or even an added sugar free chocolate if you prefer.
- Use my favorite apple slicer to make the prep for this recipe easier.
