My kids love my homemade Uncrustables as a fun way to mix up traditional sandwiches, and these Pizza Uncrustables have become another favorite easy meal in our house. They are made with just a few ingredients and have classic pizza ingredients and flavors but are ready in only about 10 minutes.

You can pack these in a lunchbox for the kids to eat at room temperature or toast or air fry them at home as a hot meal.

They can be made with a sandwich sealer or a round cookie cutter and a fork so you have options no matter what tools you have on hand.

Ingredients You Need

Here’s a look at the ingredients you need to have on hand to make these Pizza Uncrustables so you know what to pick up from the store or have ready.

Ingredients for pizza uncrustables on countertop.
  • Whole-wheat sandwich bread: Look for sliced sandwich bread that is labeled “soft” for the best results in this recipe. The texture adheres better when pressed in a sandwich sealer or with a fork.
  • Pizza sauce: You can use any variety of jarred or store-bought pizza sauce in this recipe, or even homemade Hidden Veggie Pasta Sauce.
  • Mozzarella cheese: I like to use shredded mozzarella cheese for the classic pizza flavor.
  • Pepperoni, olive oil spray, and Parmesan cheese (optional but recommended)

Frequently Asked Questions

What’s the best bread to use for Uncrustables?

I prefer to use “soft” sandwich bread, either whole wheat (which has some fiber and protein) or white bread. This type of sliced bread is softer and is easier to seal around the edges of the Uncrustable. It can also help to warm the bread slightly or at the very least use room temperature bread.

How can I make my Uncrustables stay together better around the edges?

Use soft sandwich bread and try warming it slightly if it’s not sealing. You can also seal it on one side, then flip it over and seal it again. This helps the bread seal from both sides.

What can I make with the leftover crust?

I like to add the leftover bread to a freezer bag and freeze until I have enough to make a batch of French Toast Casserole, Apple French Toast Casserole, or use it to fry eggs in. Some people also dice the bread and use it to make croutons.

How to Store

Store assembled Pizza Uncrustables in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Seal the edges again if they come apart at all during storage. You can also freeze them and put them frozen into the air fryer or toaster to warm through.

Best Tips for Success

  • If using the oven to bake the Uncrustables, preheat the oven before you start assembling.
  • You can pack these in lunches without cooking them if the kids enjoy them that way.
  • Dice the leftover crusts and use them to make French Toast Casserole or Apple French Toast Casserole.
  • Use dairy-free cheese and/or soft gluten-free sliced bread if needed.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices whole-wheat sandwich bread
  • 2 tablespoons pizza sauce
  • 2 tablespoons shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Pepperoni, olive oil spray, and Parmesan cheese (optional but recommended)

Instructions

  • Use a sandwich sealer round or a round cookie cutter to cut out circles from the bread. Set aside the crusts to use later. (See Notes.)
  • Add 1-2 teaspoons of pizza sauce to the center of half of the bread rounds. Spread, leaving a bare edge (so the sauce doesn't squeeze out the edges.)
  • Add 1 tablespoon cheese and pepperoni, if using, on top of the sauce.
  • Put the sandwich sealer round back around the bread, add a plain piece of bread on top, and seal with the other piece of the sandwich sealer. (If using a cookie cutter, you can press the edges of the bread together with a fork.)
  • Repeat to make the rest of the Uncrustables.
  • Spray lightly with olive oil and sprinkle with Parmesan. (This helps them brown and adds flavor.)
  • Air-fry or bake at 375 degrees F for about 4-6 minutes on a parchment paper lined baking tray or until the bread is lightly golden brown. Serve warm…or cold if the kids don't care!

Notes

  • If using the oven to bake the Uncrustables, preheat the oven before you start assembling.
  • You can pack these in lunches without cooking them if the kids enjoy them that way.
  • Dice the leftover crusts and use them to make French Toast Casserole or Apple French Toast Casserole.
  • Use dairy-free cheese and/or soft gluten-free sliced bread if needed.
